FAQ

Study at Kyushu University

There are two main ways: exchange programs with agreements (university-level and faculty level) and privately funded programs. Please contact the International Student Section, International Student Exchange Division, International Affairs Department, Kyushu University, for information on exchange programs through university-level exchange agreements, and the Student Affairs Section, School of Design, Kyushu University for information on exchange programs through faculty-level exchange agreements.

It can be six months (one semester from April to September or October to March) or one year.

Students who plan to take classes in English must submit an English language proficiency certificate (TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, etc.).
Students who plan to take the classes in Japanese must submit a Japanese language proficiency certificate (JLPT, etc.).
If you are unable to submit the certificate, you will need to ask your academic advisor at your university to prepare a document stating that you have sufficient English and/or Japanese language proficiency to take classes at Kyushu University.

For privately funded international students, please refer to “Kyushu University SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION” for details.
For exchange students from Kyushu University’s partner universities, please refer to “Friendship Scholarship” .

You can apply for the student exchange program if your university has no exchange agreement with Kyushu University. However, you will need to pay the tuition fee, which is 14,800 yen per credit. You are recommended to take 14 credits in one semester (six months). (The tuition fee is subject to change.)
Tuition Fee

Some of the undergraduate subjects are offered in English, but most of the subjects are conducted in Japanese. However, all the subjects in the graduate program will be offered in English from AY 2022.

You will be given information on the ” Online Application System” by the International Student Exchange Division, International Affairs Department, Kyushu University.

Please apply at the Japanese embassy or consulate in your country or at a designated visa agency listed on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

-Certificate of Eligibility (CoE): The university will send you a CoE as soon as it is issued after you have completed the procedures on the “Online Application System”.
-Application form (Please check with the Japanese embassy or consulate general of your country for instructions on how to fill out the form.)
-Passport, etc.

Dormitory Application

You can apply through the “Online Application System”. You will be informed by the International Student Exchange Division, International Affairs Department, Kyushu University when it is time to apply. The nearest dormitory to the School of Design (Ohashi Campus) is “Ijiri International House”. Yes, you can. When it is time to apply for dormitory, the International Student Exchange Division, International Affairs Department, Kyushu University, will provide information on application procedures. However, if you are already living in Fukuoka City, you cannot apply for the dormitory

Other Procedures before entering Japan

The university recommends that you come to Japan by yourself first, get used to life in Japan and find an apartment for your family before your family comes to Japan. If you really wish to come to Japan with your family, please obtain permission from your academic advisor and apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) for your family through the “Online Application System”. In this case, it will take longer than the usual procedure (about 2 months) to issue the CoE.

If you have questions about procedures at the ward office, opening a bank account, etc., you can consult the International Student Exchange Division via  ”Online Ask Desk” service. Please make an appointment in advance. In addition, you can consult with your supporter if you have any questions on the Ohashi Campus after you arrive in Japan.

Japanese Classes at Kyushu University
