Silpakorn University is one of the national universities in Thailand, established in 1933 as a school with a Fine Arts Department and officially named Silpakorn University in 1943. Professor Silpa Bhirasri, alias Corrado Feroci, who was an Italian sculptor, contributed to its establishment and development during the reign of King Rama VI. The Faculty of Painting and Sculpture (now the Faculty of Painting Sculpture and Graphic Arts) was established in 1955, followed by the Faculty of Thai Architecture (later renamed the Faculty of Architecture), subsequently the Faculty of Archaeology, and then the Faculty of Decorative Arts. Currently, there are 13 faculties with approximately 7,000 students enrolled.

Approaching its seventh decade of operation, the Faculty has revised and designed new curricula that are current and in accordance with international requirements, placing emphasis on cultural heritage in an up-to-date social context. In response to the socio-economic situation and market demands, the number of programs offered by the Faculty have therefore increased over the years. Totaling seventeen programs altogether, two are bachelor’s degree programs, ten master’s degree programs, and five doctoral degree programs. These range from architectural programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to urban design, urban and environmental planning, construction management, and landscape architecture programs at the postgraduate level.

Apart from the normal programs, some programs are especially unique because they are based on several decades of accumulated knowledge, expertise, practices, and research. Such programs are Architectural Heritage, Creative Industries, and Tourism Management (AHCITM) Program, Vernacular Architecture and Built Environment (VABE) Program, and History of Architecture Program. While these are programs at the postgraduate level, Thai Architecture is offered at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The Faculty of Architecture is taught at Silpakorn University’s founding campus, Wang Tha Phra, which is ideally located at the heart of Bangkok’s inner-city area known as Rattanakosin Island. Situated across from the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, which are primarily the most significant historic and revered sites in Thailand, the campus occupies an area of approximately 3 acres that was once the residence of H.R.H. Prince Narisara Nuvadtivongse, known as “Wang Tha Phra”, to the west of which flows the famous Chao Phraya River that runs through most of the central part of Thailand, while the surrounding area boasts numerous interesting historical places of national importance that attract a large number of tourists and visitors annually. In the near future, we will expand to the Sanamchandra palace campus in Nakhorn Pathom province.
