The Karlsruhe University of Art and Design was founded in 1992 together with ZKM (Center for Art and Media), a renowned center for media art. The university, which is unique in combining teaching, research and exhibition functions, had a mission in the late 80s and early 90s to advance art and education that combined traditional art with cutting-edge media technology, especially expression using electronic media. Its forward-thinking philosophy is still alive today, and it is constantly changing, without being biased toward any artistic trend in both practice and theory. Many of its presidents have been philosophers, and the school’s culture is characterized by an emphasis on the philosophical and ideological aspects of art and respect for value pluralism. There are five departments: Exhibition Design and Scenography, Communication Design, Product Design, Media Art and the Department of Art Research and Media Philosophy is a theoretical department. Students are required to take both practical and theoretical subjects. The campus, renovated from an old factory, has an artistic atmosphere, with artworks on display everywhere and often held high-quality exhibitions.
