Which is the most convenient supermarket?

Just like in other countries, in Japan and more specifically in Ohashi, Fukuoka, there is a wide variety of stores and supermarkets where you can buy daily necessities, personal products, cleaning items, home goods, and consumables, among others. Quickly coming to mind are the small local fruit and vegetable shops or convenience stores, like 7-Eleven and LAWSON. However, when it comes to larger or specific shopping needs, whether for cooking or general household items, we usually head to a supermarket. But which is the best supermarket near Ohashi (including Ijiri or Takamiya) if we’re looking for a balance between price and quality?

I’m someone who enjoys cooking, I love it, and that’s why I’m always on the lookout for different ingredients, not only near Ohashi but also in different parts of the city of Fukuoka. Vegetables and proteins that can suit the dishes I prepare. To do this, I started slowly searching and learning about the supermarkets in the city, especially near my apartment.

Near Ohashi, Ijiri, and even Takamiya, there are different supermarkets, such as Gyomu Super Super, HalloDay, AEON, Marukyo, TRIAL GO, Max Valu Express, Reganet, and Sunny.

If we analyze product prices, I can say that the cheapest supermarket I’ve found is Gyomu Super. I particularly like this supermarket chain not only because it’s one of the few that offers a wider variety of foreign products or because its prices are a couple of hundred yen lower but also because it has HALAL FOOD! You can buy a lot of chicken and products with Halal certification, which makes it awesome. After Gyomu Super, I consider that Marukyo and TRIAL GO could fall into the category of budget supermarkets, although the variety of products is not significant. In these three supermarkets, I’ve found that when buying vegetables, ingredients and proteins, I’ve been able to save a few hundred yen, as I mentioned earlier. Therefore, they are my top 3.

Gyomu Super
Marukyo
TRIAL GO

The remaining supermarkets, such as AEON, Max Valu / Max Valu Express, and Reganet (located in places like Ohashi Station), I consider to be supermarkets with higher prices compared to the ones mentioned earlier, especially AEON. They have a greater variety of products and a much larger number of products, but their cost is much higher. So, if you want to have more variety or opt for other options, this is the best place. However, it’s not the most convenient for your wallet. In between the two, there could be Sunny, which, while not a budget supermarket like Gyomu Super, offers certain products at affordable prices. I always tend to shop at more than one supermarket depending on what I’m looking for, and often there are very good deals, not just on food but also on household products.

This is my opinion as a foreign student and a food lover. So, when you come to Fukuoka, you can decide for yourselves which option is most convenient for your taste and budget. Bon appétit!
