Sakurai Futamigaura, the Jewel of Itoshima

Torii, is an arch or entrance erected to enter a Shinto shrine or the other world. Most people know the torii or at least have seen them. There is a large number throughout Japan, and each one is important in its own way. One of the most beautiful torii is located in Itoshima, a beautiful city located at the west end of Fukuoka, which is home to one of the most scenic spots in Japan, Sakurai Futamigaura or the couple rock, a pair of giant oceanic rocks connected forever by a sacred rope called shimenawa. The union of these rocks represents marriage, which makes this a very romantic, very attractive and also very beautiful place.

From the city center you can take a train to Itoshima. The journey can take approximately two hours as you need to change to a different train line and do some walking. However, far from being a disadvantage, this is a nice experience to take advantage of seeing new places, trying new paths, trains, experiences and even meeting new people.

You need to change the train at the Imajuku station, which is unique. This is not a new station and you can see from the surroundings that you have already started to move away from the city. But the feel is very nice, quiet and cosy which creates the sensation of being in a place that begins to change.

You can alight at Itoshima Kokomae station, where you need to walk for approximately 20 minutes to reach the shore of the beach (You can also take a bus, but I think it’s more fun to walk and learn something new). Upon reaching the shore of the beach, you can see the gigantic torii that awaits you, giving you a great welcome. A few steps down and you will be in front of it. You can appreciate the spitting image of the couple rock, an unforgettable spectacle as a precious moment for photographs. However, let’s not forget to live in the moment for our senses, not just through the camera lens. As a final suggestion, it is ideal to arrive at sunset. The view is mesmerizing.
