Ghent University, founded in 1817, is one of the leading Dutch-speaking universities. It has a distinct linguistic and cultural identity, which makes it a useful and socially pluralistic university, open to students from all social, cultural, and political backgrounds. The Faculty of Arts and Philosophy consists of eleven departments that offer a wide variety of courses. One of the largest faculties at Ghent University, it is particularly active in student exchanges.
