Study Abroad in Cologne, Germany 2023 - 2024

Destination: TH Köln -University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Cultural Sciences
Study Period: September 2023 – February 2024
Affiliation/Grade at the start of studying abroad: Graduate School of Design, Media Design Course, Master Year 2

The main reason I chose this university was to conduct research abroad for my master’s thesis. In addition, I also wanted to learn English. When I consulted with Professor Ikeda, she introduced me to this university where English classes are also offered, and I decided to enroll here.

The appealing aspect was the mostly student-led class format, where professors dedicated themselves to supporting and guiding students. Beyond classes, places like the cafeteria and workshops within the school were organized by motivated students who actively planned events, gathered people, and everyone enthusiastically participated, inspiring a sense of ambition.

Despite continuous troubles causing accumulating stress, I tried to go to school or outside every day and engage in conversations with people. When attempting any procedures, if I applied online or through email, there would either be no response or a different issue would arise in the earlier stages. Therefore, relying on others to the maximum extent and taking prompt action were crucial. Accepting things beyond my control, except for life-threatening situations, was also important.

Through my master’s thesis research, I gained results, improved my English proficiency, and developed skills in typography, video production, and audio-visual work. I also learned to adapt to cultural and value differences and enhance my resilience when dealing with unexpected challenges. Additionally, I formed friendships with people I can consider as close friends. Moving forward, I aim to further improve my English skills and speak more fluently.

If you can find enjoyment in everything except facing life-threatening situations, you can pretty much overcome anything with determination. Having confidence, being grateful for supportive people, borrowing strength from them to the fullest, and saying yes to their invitations whenever possible are crucial. Initially, I faced continuous troubles and couldn not focus on school life or my original purpose, leading to moments of regret about why I came. However, in the end, the sense of accomplishment and the relationships with friends became invaluable.I do not recommend doing a study abroad during the second year of the master’s program because the timing for the master’s thesis and the graduation presentation at the exchange destination may overlap, causing a challenging situation.
